Title

OhmageX a cross platform tool to introduce Learners to Data Science using Mobile Devices

Abstract

Learn how ohmageX is being used at UCLA and LAUSD, as a cross platform open source tool suite to introduce students to the basics of data science. It's critical to update statistics courses with experiential hands-on data collection assignments that prepare students for today's data-driven reality. Collecting data with their own devices makes quantitative analysis more meaningful and improves critical thinking and problem solving skills. OhmageX lets students form their own hypotheses, and then author their own data collection instruments with predictions of real world mathematical models. They then go into the field independently or as teams to utilize their mobile devices to collect data ( including GPS, time stamped images, video or audio data) . Then the exploration of data science begins and students use exploratory data visualization dashboards including mapped data, plotting tools and R studio. Students test both their hypotheses and assumptions to evaluate if they held true in reality.
